Soon we might be as cool as this bro

Sony's 'Innovation at PlayStation' Panel is live now at GDC, here are some excerpts from a live blog:

IGN Live Blog wrote:

Virtual reality, he says, is the next innovation from PlayStation "that may well shape the future of games."

VR allows "more immersive games," his accompanying slide explains.

A "sense of presence" is given by VR. Immersion is key.

"I'm thrilled to introduce Project Morpheus," PS4's VR headset.

It will allow Sony "to push the boundaries of play... This prototype is by no means final." They will continue to work on it.

This prototype will allow for developers to develop games using it. "We believe Morpheus will further enhance the world of PlayStation 4 with seamless integration with PlayStation Camera, DualShock 4, and PS Move."

Cool beans! Exciting times for PS4 players, well it will be in a year when it gets officially released and some games support it I guess :P

It's interesting that he says "next innovation" when I can't really think of any previous ones. Playstation has always been very evolutionary (and damn good at it, according to sales) but never revolutionary. Can you guys think of anything Playstation has done in the past that has actually been unique?

The only things I can really think of have been switching to CD and switching to Blu Ray but even then CD was done before they did it and Blu Ray was again just another stepping stone of evolution.

The previous point before the innovation one was:

Realtime 3D graphics, CD ROM, Cell Processor, PSN, EyeToy, PS Move, Blu-Ray, Share Button, Rempte Play, PS Now. These are the technologies that Sony has taken advantage of, and in some cases pioneered.

And here's a clearer shot of the prototype, and a few more selected quotes:

VR development has been on an "S Curve," he explains. "Presence is disruptive. It's really that compelling." It will be "awesome for games," but VR "will go beyond games."

Marks is working on a project with NASA, where he thinks VR could be viable. They're working on a "Mars Demo" where it feels like you're actually standing on the red planet.

Sight, Sound, Tracking, Control, Ease of Use, Content. Those are the six principles of VR. "If we can nail these six areas, VR could be a mass market industry."

Unity, Havok, Wwise, Gigantic, Autodesk Gameware, Criware, DDD, Silicon Studio, Epic Games, Bitsquid, Crytek all on board with Project Morpheus.

I'd say the only one of those listed "innovations" that Sony made that actually came from them was probably EyeToy which was a minor to moderate success at best. Have you found yourself using the share button at all?

I have some captured screenshots and video, mostly of cool glitches. I haven't really fleshed it out but the only interface options initally are to share to facebook and twitter. I assume I can plug in a USB or something, probably.

the share button hasnt gotten much use from me. just a change of settings and had one test of streaming. tbh, i havent really wanted to stream video until FFXIV gets released and then maybe every saturday or sunday, do a live stream of a few hours.

I've used the Share button a bit, mostly to take a cool screenshot when I'm proud of something I've achieved or when a scene looks extra pretty. It pops up on your friend's feeds which is pretty cool so you can compare progress or badass moves, it's a bit gimmicky but I quite like it.

IGN Live Blog wrote:

"Your game is literally the only thing the person is seeing/hearing." "A whole new pallete of emotions you can experiment with." i.e. vertigo, claustrophobia, fear of the dark/unknown, fear of void/empty spaces, extreme/intense horror.

"There's a couch multiplayer aspect to it as well." The image can be mirrored on the screen so they can see what's going on in the headset.

"It's really going to be for everyone." It will be "comfortable" and "friendly." "Content is varied." You can even wear glasses with it.

Ergonomics. "Unique design... highly adjustable, comfortable for prolonged use, supports custom headphones."

"Most of the weight is on your head..." little to no weight on your nose, cheeks, et cetera.

I have not seen this happen.

Hmmm I must have it wrong then. I've seen my own screenshots in the feed and just assumed friends ones would too.

I swear I saw that functionality in a PS4 promo video, maybe it's still on the way?
Fun
I imagine this will be something like gen 1 Kinect in the sense that the potential is exciting, but there will be some massive glaring flaws, drawbacks and limitations.

Are you a wizard?

This upcoming update will add a rich video editor with a simple tool to personalize your video clips, and you’ll also be able to export to and save the videos and screenshots you create by pressing the SHARE button to a USB drive.
