Ultimate Werewolf can be played with three to 68 players of all ages. Each player has an agenda: as a villager, hunt down the werewolves; as a werewolf, convince the other villagers that you are innocent, while secretly attacking those same villagers each night. Dozens of special roles are available to help both the villagers and the werewolves achieve their goals. The game has more than thirty unique roles, eighteen different scenarios, a set of eighty fully illustrated cards, a moderator score pad to keep track of games, and a comprehensive game guide.

I played this bad boy over the weekend and it was a lot of fun. It's basically Mafia Wars which we played a lot of on the forums, but you can play it with 5 − 68 players!

Wikipedia lists the skills required as: Bluffing, Partnership, Social skills, Roleplay, Negotiation and Deduction, though the most important one is Bullshitting.

How To Play

For those who haven't played Mafia Wars, it is a social game where everyone is given a role and at a basic level is either a good guy villager, or an evil werewolf.

During the day cycle everyone talks amongst themselves and the villagers try to deduce who is the werewolf, while the werewolves try to throw people off their trail and cast suspicion on others. At the end of the day cycle everyone votes to lynch someone and they die. If it's a werewolf, well played villagers! If it's a villager, bad luck!

Next comes the night cycle where everyone covers their eyes, the werewolves open their eyes and decide on a villager to kill off. All other special roles happen at night time too.

This repeats until either all the werewolves are dead (villagers win!) or enough villagers die so that the number of werewolves is the same as the villagers (werewolves win!) - or some special cards.

There's a bunch more steps to it, but essentially it follows that general pattern.

We had about 5 games over a few hours and everyone had a great time. Some people are great at deducing shit, reading body language and defending themselves, while others played a quiet game trying to fly under the radar.

Its got a bit of a steep learning curve and people need to be on board to play it properly (no peeking/cheating, talking out of turn etc) but it was a lot of fun. As there's a fuck load of special characters you can make a deck/build simple for newbies learning, or advanced for veterans.

I enjoyed it a lot and thought it would be good for a few games every now and then, as long as you have 5 people everyone can play so it avoids the most annoying thing about most board games. I've ordered a copy for myself and if it arrives on time I'll bring it to the meet, so we can play a few games if people are keen.

Has anyone played it before? Or another/similar variant?

If you're coming to the meet, would you be keen? I'm sure we can fit some drinking rules in there somewhere ;)
This sounds like it'd be great at the meet. Also we should play some Mafia Wars again on the forums.

Also I agree that the 'close your eyes, don't cheat' thing sounds like it wouldn't work very well. Granted I haven't seen it in action, so I can't judge with any authority, but there must be a more cheat-proof way of doing it.
There's a moderator for each game who controls the day/night cycle, calls out when people go to sleep, werewolves wake up and tell everyone who died etc.

They also check for cheaters, and when you've got the palms of your hands over your eyes it's hard to see through them. To be honest my biggest concern was feeling someone next to you move when "werewolves wake up" but we didn't have any issues with that either.
No one really gets up, and no one but the Moderator talks during the night phase. The werewolves just uncover their eyes, look at each other and point to who they want to kill.

Special roles like the Seer has a night action where they open their eyes, point to someone and the moderator will tell them if they're a villager or werewolf by holding up a card with V or W on it. Stuff like that.

We had 12 people playing and it was great. Started off with 2 Werewolves, 1 Seer and the rest Villagers for a couple of basic games so people learnt the rules and how to catch people out then we mixed it up with some more special role cards which was good and kept it all fresh.
If it's anything like Mafia Wars I'll die pretty quickly innocent or not, hahaha. This does sound great though! It's cool it has the option for such a huge player base too, definitely sounds like a good meet game.

Indeed, adding drinking rules are a must for the meet.

I actually drank 4L of Old Rosie Scrumpy because I wanted the flagons for my homebrew mead, once you get over the initial dryness it's quite nice.
