Oh Servant x Service. Light hearted look at civil service in Japan.

I have a friend like that, just content with the simple life like that girl in the cartoon. One of the happiest people I know I'd say. I'm envious of people like that.

Maybe we grow up believing that life is some magnificent journey where everything should be perfect, but really what gives us the right to be so lucky to have it better than everyone else that has ever lived before? Life is a great thing to be respected, but people have too high of expectations of life. These people have it all wrong, many of the happiest people in the world have the simplest lives. Happiness is a chemical in the brain mostly triggered by the simple things.

Lower your expectations, surrender to mediocrity and the simple life, that way you wont be overwhelmed by it and maybe you will be able to enjoy it more.

Dennis Leary gets it.

A good way of thinking if you want to get nowhere in life...

You should always be striving to achieve otherwise how do you better yourself or your situation?

You could argue the other way too. Sure, you may be more fortunate/have more opportunities in life than many other people. So make the most of those opportunities/talents/whatever and live the best life/be the best person you can.

I suspect your final sentence wasn't meant to be the nihilistic statement it reads as -- perhaps more something like 'have realistic expectations, achievable goals and live within your means'.*

*Edit - and stop and smell the roses

The was pretty much the philosophy I adapted after having seen and/or worked in the third world. I do need to stop and smell the roses a bit more though.

I really didn't mean what I wrote in a negative respect. I do think that the topic is taboo and I think that is apart of the gen Y problem. You want it all and that makes you happy? Go for it good for you. You want it all and you are not happy? Then you are contradicting your self, maybe wanting it all isn't for you, maybe you would be happier with a more simple life.
