You'll need a Playstation Plus subscription to play online multiplayer on your PS4, but you should sign up anyway and get a shitload of free stuff.

So you can sign up for a 14 day free PSN+ period, which gives you full access. Or there's 1/3/12 month renewal things. It allows you to play your games online, just like XBAWKS LIVE but has a bunch of extra things too.

There's the usual games you can download - demos or full game digital copies but they're ~$100 on the Australian store and you can get them for ~$80 at JB.

Then there's the Instant Games Collection which is where they have a couple of games each month (I think) up there for free. This time it's Resogun and Contrast, both of which are pretty cool and usually cost $15-20. Resogun is a classic arcade style side scroller shoot em up, and Contrast is a platformer where you can play with shadows! Looking at the previous PS3 PSN+ game list it's quite impressive, with Borderlands 2, Far Cray 3 and a bunch of others all for free. So PSN+ definitely seems like it'll pay itself off over the year.

As long as you have the PSN+ subscription and 'buy' the free games when they're free, as long as your sub is live you'll be able to play them. So if you're thinking of getting a PSN in a month or two, it might be worth getting the PSN+ sub now and stocking up on free games.

I also signed up a new PSN user (but didn't subscript to PNS+) with a US address, to get access to the US store which has some more games and better prices. You buy PSN game cards from Amazon.com (just be sure to put in a US address during checkout) and redeem them on the US store. I bought Trine 2 for $15 instead of $25 as it was on flash sale, and other games are cheaper after the exchange rate which is cool. If you're going to do this, just make sure that you put in an Oregon or Delaware address as they have less sales tax or something.

PSN+ game for January is Don't Starve which was one of my favourite games last year.

The game is an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic. You play as Wilson, an intrepid Gentleman Scientist who has been trapped by a demon and transported to a mysterious wilderness world. Wilson must learn to exploit his environment and its inhabitants if he ever hopes to escape and find his way back home.

It's got insane replayability and should be quite a different game from when I played months ago as they keep putting out regular content patches.

I'm quite excited to see how it will translate to the PS4, especially since it's free!

In February, Outlast Will be Free on PlayStation Plus

In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the "research and charity" branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, has been operating in strict secrecy... until now.

Acting on a tip from an inside source, independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into the facility, and what he discovers walks a terrifying line being science and religion, nature and something else entirely. Once inside, his only hope of escape lies with the terrible truth at the heart of Mount Massive.

Not sure if I'll have the balls to play this one as the trailer made me shit my pants more than enough.. but it might be someone's cup of tea!

This game is free for me to download on PSN?

If you have a PSN+ subscription, it sure is.

Head to Playstation Store > Playstation Plus > Instant Game Collection and it should be there with Resogun.

Go in and have a look, I think you can go into the PS Settings and PSN Subscriptions. Or just check the store and see what it says, though even though I have a subscription it still tries to sell it to me. If it says Don't Starve is free then you will have it, otherwise it'll cost $15.

I think you can even activate a free 7 or 14 day trial if you're a new Playstation user or something, or there might have been a code for one in the console box or at the back of a booklet.

A year is ~$60, and with free games coming out each month it seems worth it to me.

And don't forget to add your name to the Friend Codes thread :)

I downloaded Don't Starve, but living with two girls who don't understand the love of gaming, I haven't played it yet. I'm glad the titles coming out are looking better though. Contrast was pretty meh mixed with some good concepts and Resogun is just batshit insane hard spaceship shooting.

Outlast dropped yesterday for Australians.

Make sure it's dark, you turn the sound up and lights off when playing this as it sounds like we're in for a scare!

I haven't played it yet, but think I'll get Stacey to watch or even have a play. She loves horror movies so I think she might like this.

Metro Last Light and BioShock Infinite for PS3 and a few more PS Vita titles are also free for PSN+ members.

Yeah since I dont have aPS4 yet, I had to put those games in my to download list on the PSN store website. I asked a guy at EB to see if he played Outlast and he did on PC. He got to to get it ready for my PS4 now for next month and to keep a few pairs of underwear ready. Games for PS4 when I get it will be FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, Resogun, Contrast, Don't Starve, Outlast and whatever the March one will be. Almost close to a point where I can preorder MGS Ground Zero. I can't wait.

Hell yeah, that's the spirit :D

I'm looking to eventually get a PS Vita, and am collecting a nice backlog of games through PSN+ that I'll already have to play on it straight away which is nice.

Yeah I had a PS Vita and then I got stolen. Luck I took my memory card out each night while I was staying in the hostel where it was stolen while I was working. 8Gb card so and it has Gravity Rush and Wipeout on it. Think theres also FF Dissidia duo decim and Dynasty Warriors. My list of games has grown a lot since getting PS+. Every month I click on each game I want (either now or in the future) so in case one month is crap, I have back up games. So far each month has at least one game I want. This month Bioshock Inifinite, Outlast, Blazblue and Dynasty Warriors Next.

Dead Nation has been confirmed for the March addition to PSN+ member's Instant Game Collection.

Run-and-gun through the zombie apocalypse as hit arcade shooter Dead Nation shuffles onto PlayStation 4. Fight for your life alone or with a friend as Jack McReady or Scarlett Blake as you step onto the streets of a city overrunwith undead flesh-eaters. And, if you’re feeling really brave, take a walk down the Road of Devastation – a deadly experiment that pushes your survival skills to the absolute limit as you face hordes of zombies with no extra lives and no second chances. The dead may walk – but you can make sure they don’t walk very far.

It doesn't look like anything too special, but could be a nice couch co-op game. With the limited PS4 releases it's definitely better than nothing!

Also coming in March for other platforms:
  • Tomb Raider (PS3)
  • Brothers A Tale of Two Sons (PS3)
  • Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD (PS Vita)

Oops, looks like I put the US list up before, amended the above list for the AUS PSN+ freebies.
