Bonus hipster points for using a jar

The mint in my herb garden is growing out of control, so to curve this behaviour I am cutting bits off it and showing it who's boss by using its delicious flavoured leaves in my Mojitos. That'll teach it!

However I've hit a bit of a problem, they just don't taste right!

They taste okay, but nowhere near the level I've had when a professional makes them for me.

I made two, but all Stacey could taste was the Bacardi (even though she got the weaker one..) and all I could taste was soda water. In the end I drank both of them as they still went down ok and got a nice buzz. At least that part worked.

I don't really drink soda water in anything else as I don't particularly like the taste, so I tried with Lemonade. That was better as it didn't taste like soda water, but way too sweet.

Inja liked the one I made him with soda water, but it just wasn't for me.

How do you make mojitos? What do you use to top it up? What the fuck am I doing wrong?

In the video it looks too clean. I dont really drink Mojitos but when Ive seen them made most of the time they put a lot more leaves than 12 and they put the lime into the glass and muddle the crap out of it to get all the juice and leaves mixed together. Yeah you might have to pick a few leaves out of your mouth but I bet you get more flavour out of it. My friend had one when we went out a few weeks ago and it looked a lot darker than the one they have in the video. Maybe its how youre muddling it?

Best way to muddle mint (I love it in my tea) is to roll it between your palms semi-aggressively. Break the layer of 'skin' on the surface of the leaves without tearing them apart. It seems to be the most effective way of releasing the oils / juices from the mint leaf. Muddling by smashing it with a stir stick after it's in the drink doesn't get as much of the bright fresh mint taste.

Ok, so to make a Mojito don't muddle the mint it bruises and releases a bitter flavours. You need to clap the mint (maybe twice if the first wasn't solid enough), cup your hands slightly when you clap the mint so you get a hollow sound. You also want to use a better rum than Bacardi, I recommend Mount Gay (either colour will do, preferably white{not as strong flavour for girls}.) You get about about 3/8 to 1/2 a lime cut into 1/8 wedges and 1 - 1 1/2 teaspoons of "raw" sugar and muddle it in the bottom of your glass. The you then cover with ice and your mint (3-6 large leaves) (preferably crushed) pour in 30-45 ml of rum, or 60-90 ml in a large glass (huge ass cocktail glass about the size of a pint) top with soda water. Then stir with a long handled spoon trying to pull up the flavours from the bottom. at this point you can add sugar syrup to taste. (sugar boiled water) then heap crushed ice on top and garnish with lime and mint. Drink with straw.

Edit: If the flavours aren't strong enough just add a little more of what you think is needed. Bacardi is a really powerful tasting rum you want something a little more subtle.

PS: That guy is an idiot and couldn't make a cocktail to save his life. I want to punch him in the balls, repeatedly for ruining my faith in instructional videos.

Looks like i'll be heading to the bottleo soon for some better rum! I love Mount Gay, will need to look out for the white variety. Also Inja and I drank most of the Bacardi.. :viking:

I've heard of clapping mint too, and usually clap for the garnish to release it's delicious odours.

I think i've got it! Soda water was too soda-y, Lemonade was too sweet, but i've made a couple over the last few days with Kirks Sugar Free Lemonade and it seems to be just the right amount of everything. The lemonade isn't as sweet and is a bit drier which must help.

Still using Bacardi and the original recipe above but doubled (only 1.5x sugar though) and they are consistently delicious. Stacey couldn't taste the Bacardi too which is a good sign it won't only be tasty for high booze tolerance people like myself.

Definitely still want to try it with a better rum next time though, will try pick up a bottle of Mount Gay white rum on the way home.

Might need to plant another mint at the rate i'm sucking these down..

Even though most of you don't give a fuck, thought I would post an update on my Mojito adventure. I know at least Steve and Bain are probably interested.

The mint in my herb garden was out of control, it had tendrils running all over the place like something out of Darkshaunz's dreams and it had to go.

I ripped that motherfucker out of the ground, but not before harvesting all of its delicious minty leaves. I'll replace it soon and plant it properly, in a buried pot so it can't take over the world again.

I had a shit load of mint leaves and reason to celebrate so I looked into Mojitos once again and found a simple sugar syrup and mint tincture method and belted that out yesterday afternoon.

Mix 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar in a saucepan and heat until boiling. Stir until the sugar dissolves (about a minute). Then turn off the heat. Toss in a handfull of mint leaves and let it steep (just sit there off the heat) for an hour or so. Strain out the leaves and store in the fridge till you’re ready to use it.

The mojitos I made last night with the syrup were probably my best yet!

  • 1 shot minty sugar syrup
  • 1.5 shot Mount Gay white rum
  • Handful of mint leaves
  • Juice of half a lime
  • Handful of ice
  • Medium splash of soda water
  • Clap and add garnish

Fucking delicious. That makes a small drink, don't top it up with the soda water as it just needs a dash and the ratios will be wrong. I was making double the recipe that filled up a nice sized glass, was fucking delicious and devilishly potent. I've still got over half the syrup I used for next time too!

At my work Christmas party the other night a few people ordered Mojitos and they came without any mint in them. Can that even be considered a Mojito?

Didn't really bother me though as I was busy ordering Tom Collins' two at a time

If they used a minty syrup like I mentioned above, you wouldn't really need to add mint - but it'd still make it a lot better if they did.
